Before 1886, whiskey was sold directly from barrels — which meant that by the time it reached the customer's glass, it might have been diluted, adulterated, or outright replaced with something else by an unscrupulous middleman. John's Lane Distillery, the original home of Powers, changed that. They pioneered the practice of bottling their whiskey before sale to guarantee purity and consistency. The bottle you pick up today is the direct descendant of that innovation.
Powers was founded in 1791 by James Power — who was, fittingly, an innkeeper. The distillery operated at John's Lane in Dublin for nearly two centuries, and Powers Gold Label held the title of best-selling whiskey in all of Ireland until 2008, when it was finally surpassed by Jameson. That's over two hundred years of Irishmen and women reaching for the same bottle.
What keeps them reaching? The flavor. Powers Gold Label is a blend of pot still whiskey and grain whiskey, with the pot still component — made from a combination of malted and unmalted barley — taking the lead. That unmalted barley is the secret. It gives pot still Irish whiskey a characteristic spice and weight that you won't find in a standard blended Scotch or most American whiskeys. Powers leans into that character hard.
On the nose, crisp green apple and ripe pear arrive first, followed by honey and vanilla, and then a warm drift of cinnamon and nutmeg with subtle oak. It's inviting and aromatic without being complicated.
The palate is where Powers earns its loyalty. Orchard fruits lead, but the mid-palate belongs to spice — black pepper, fresh ginger — that builds steadily and makes the whiskey feel alive in the glass. Caramel and toasted barley provide balance and sweetness. The finish is medium-length and warming, fading to honey, dried fruit, and toasted nuts.
